How a High School Football Injury Led Me to Become a Chiropractor
Dr. Karl Anderson, DC
Every chiropractor has a story about how they found this profession. Mine starts on a football field, in a moment I still remember with total clarity — and it ends with a single adjustment that changed the entire direction of my life.
The Hit That Changed Everything
I was in high school, playing the sport I loved, when I took a hit that I’ll never forget. I collided head-on with another player, our helmets slamming together with a force that seemed to rattle every bone in my neck. I remember the sharp, radiating pain that shot down through my shoulders the moment I stood up. My neck felt locked, my range of motion was gone, and even simple movements — turning my head to check my blind spot, looking down at my phone, tilting my chin to laugh at something — became small exercises in pain management.
Like a lot of teenage athletes, I tried to push through it. I figured it would heal on its own with rest and time. But the days went on, and the stiffness and pain didn’t budge. It affected my sleep, my focus in school, and honestly, my mood. I was frustrated, and I didn’t know where to turn.
The Neighbor Who Changed My Path
That’s when my neighbor, Randy Hayes, stepped in.
Randy ran a local practice called Hayes Chiropractic, and he’d known my family for years. When he heard about my injury, he offered to take a look. I’ll be honest — at that point I didn’t know much about chiropractic care. I was skeptical, but I was also desperate for relief, so I said yes.
What happened next is something I still think about to this day. Randy examined my neck carefully, explained what he was seeing, and performed a single, precise adjustment. The change was immediate. The tension I’d been carrying for what felt like forever released. My range of motion came back. The pain that had been shadowing every movement of my head and neck was simply… gone.
One adjustment. That was all it took.
From Patient to Practitioner
That experience didn’t just fix my neck — it planted a seed. I started asking Randy questions every chance I got. How did that work? What was actually going on in my spine that caused that pain? How did one precise movement undo weeks of suffering?
The more I learned, the more fascinated I became with the body’s ability to heal itself when it’s properly aligned and supported. What started as curiosity turned into a genuine passion, and that passion eventually turned into a career path. I went on to study chiropractic care formally, and I’ve never looked back.
I often think about how differently things could have gone if Randy hadn’t been there — if I hadn’t had a neighbor who happened to run Hayes Chiropractic and happened to care enough to help a kid from down the street. That single adjustment didn’t just relieve my pain; it introduced me to a field I now get to practice in every single day.
Why I Share This Story
I tell this story because it’s the honest answer to a question I get asked all the time: “Why did you become a chiropractor?” It wasn’t a decision I made in a classroom or from a textbook. It came from personal experience — from feeling firsthand what it’s like to be in pain, and then feeling firsthand what it’s like to have that pain resolved through skilled, hands-on care.
That experience shapes how I treat every patient who walks through my door. I remember what it felt like to be a scared, hurting teenager who didn’t know if relief was even possible. I remember the relief of finding out it was. And I try to bring that same level of care, attention, and results to everyone I work with.
If you’re dealing with neck pain, back pain, or an injury that’s affecting your daily life, I understand what that experience feels like — not just as a chiropractor, but as someone who has lived it. I’d be glad to help you the way Randy Hayes once helped me.
